The Presidential Initiative in Data Science is bringing together existing faculty and recruiting new faculty across the UO’s schools and colleges to create new research and educational programs.
President Michael H. Schill announced the effort on September 8, 2017, at a meeting of the UO Board of Trustees.
The initiative entered its second phase in Fall 2018 with the appointment of Professor Bill Cresko as the founding director of the Data Science Program, assisted by a steering committee comprised of faculty leaders from across campus.
Additionally, the president and provost reviewed and accepted the final recommendations from the data science visioning committee. The report will inform the direction and development of the Data Science Program, and has the potential to support nearly every aspect of scholarly activity at the University of Oregon.
