Week Seven Teaching Update

May 8, 2020

Colleagues,

We invite you to Monday’s workshops on tools and techniques to make feedback to students more meaningful and manageable. These hour-long sessions are live on Zoom at 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

If you’re teaching this summer, please note Academic Council’s new expectations that remote courses in future terms all include live engagement, which can take many forms, including “a mix of content delivery, facilitated discussions on Zoom, facilitated discussion board discussions, breakout sessions for students on Zoom, and group project time with the instructor available for guidance.”

We want to support your summer planning with simplified resources, and get them to you as early as possible. Please consider joining us for an Orientation to Remote Summer Teaching session in the weeks ahead.

Week Seven Checklist

  • Thinking about ways to support your students’ well-being? Even small adjustments to enhance predictability, flexibility, interpersonal connection, and student empowerment can help. See Teaching Engagement Program’s blog post on Supporting Students’ Well-being to get details, download a package of assignments that support time management, study skills, and planning, and watch the video of TEP/UO Online’s recent workshop with the UO Counseling Center’s expert outreach team.

  • The Accessible Education Center reminds faculty and GEs that they are responsible for adding extended time and adjusting availability windows in Canvas appropriately to facilitate testing accommodations. Questions regarding testing accommodations can be directed to aectesting@uoregon.edu or (541) 346-1074.

Now more than ever, students depend on meaningful instructor feedback in order to make solid course progress and deepen their learning. Yet, how can instructors continue to offer substantive feedback while managing unprecedented demands on their time and attention? In this hour-long workshop, UO Online and TEP offer strategies and formats for instructor and peer feedback that maximize student engagement and minimize student confusion. You will leave this workshop with concrete tools to manage your grading workflow and guide student achievement as we enter end-of-term projects and exams.
