Career Faculty Review and Tracking
Career review dates are tracked in Banner and can be reported via Cognos. This system is the official data when anticipating and validating reviews.
Schools/colleges are responsible for ensuring that dates accurately reflect the approved review schedules or review eligibility dates of all career faculty. Designated representatives in each school/college will update Banner as review dates change (add promotion and continuous employment reviews when faculty submit career promotion or continuous employment eligibility forms). The approval authority (school or college) for a particular review is responsible for updating Banner when the review is complete.
No later than September 30th annually, schools/colleges will:
- ensure that all data is correct, including updates to current faculty review schedules and the addition of review schedules for newly hired career faculty
- ensure that annual reviews and other reviews, which are the responsibility of departments/units or schools/colleges, are marked as completed.
Units should contact their school/college review manager with questions about Banner data. Additional questions may be referred to the provost’s office at vpaa@uoregon.edu.
See the UO Service Portal User Guide for more information about Banner tracking.
Continuous Employment Reviews
The details and structure of continuous employment reviews are the responsibility of the academic unit in which the appointment is made, but these reviews must follow some general guidelines, which are applicable to career faculty regardless of United Academics bargaining unit status.
Career continuous employment reviews are optional. The primary functions of these reviews are to foster continued growth and reward excellence.
To be eligible for a career continuous employment review, a faculty member must
- hold a career appointment at the highest rank in their category (i.e., Senior Instructor 2) or in a single-rank category (i.e., Professor of Practice); and
- have an annualized FTE of .50 or greater; and
- have accumulated six years of service at .50 FTE or greater, as measured in that rank or since their most recent career continuous employment review.
Process
- Candidates should work with their unit manager to determine continuous employment review eligibility, using the appropriate eligibility form.
- Submit the completed form to the department/unit head with notice of intent to be considered for continuous employment review.
- The unit head will provide their e-signature on the form.
- The unit manager will then submit the form to HROps@uoregon.edu for verification.
- The returned HR verified form must be included in the promotion dossier.
To initiate the continuous employment review (CER), the faculty member must notify their department or unit head of their intention to stand for CER in spring term of the year preceding the review process.
Continuous employment reviews for career faculty will generally mirror the scope and process for career instructional or career research promotion reviews to the highest rank. Continuous employment reviews during AY24-25 should follow the unit’s career promotion reviews for the highest rank while policies related to faculty review are being revised or created. If a unit has approved career continuous employment review policies in place by Fall 2024, it will follow that policy.
If the final review by the Office of the Provost determines that the candidate’s performance meets or exceeds expectations in all categories of their work, the faculty member will receive an increase to their base salary.
Research career faculty and librarians will undergo continuous employment review of their achievements in professional roles according to their unit policies.
When applicable, the evaluation of scholarship, research, and creative activity for instructional, research or librarian career faculty will include assessment of work quality, impact on field nationally and internationally, and overall contribution to the discipline or program.
