Office of the Provost Resources
The UO, a top comprehensive public research university dedicated to exceptional teaching, research, and service, is determined to help you integrate into a work and life environment founded on equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. While the university has created and supported myriad programs to this end, we want to highlight a few that are potentially relevant to you.
New Faculty Support
We are committed to rich, engaging programing that ensures our faculty feel supported by the University, find their community, and are able to continually grow across their career as teachers, mentors, scholars and leaders. The Office of the Provost offers faculty programs, workshops, and trainings for faculty and unit heads, with special attention to moments of transition. Learn about the faculty programs and resources on the provost's website.
Dual Career Hiring
We recognize that supporting dual career couples is key to the recruitment and retention of a diverse and dynamic faculty. We are committed to assisting dual career partners with their job searches and career transitions through a range of resources and opportunities tailored to the individual.
The University of Oregon employs a broad and progressive definition of domestic partnership, inclusive of marital and non-marital relationships, regardless of gender identity or expression.
The dual career liaison, located in the Office of the ProvOst, is available for consultations to assist partners in planning their job searches or career transitions. While employment is not guaranteed, the liaison will:
- Resources and advice for off-campus job opportunities
- Identification of on-campus job opportunities
- Information about further academic study
- Resume/CV and cover letter reviews
- Career transition or relaunch advice
Competitive Benefits for UO Employees
UO offers a comprehensive and competitive benefits package to all eligible employees (0.5 FTE or greater and expected to work at least 90 days) to meet their health and wellbeing needs and those of their family members. This package compares favorably in value to most of our peers. We are especially proud of the university’s health benefits and retirement benefits.
Childcare and Caregiving
Balancing work and family can present a challenge. The UO is cognizant of this fact, and whether you are a parent now or plan to be, we would like you to know that university affiliated families have access to three childcare centers on campus. These centers provide care for preschool and elementary school-aged children. Priority is given to UO families. Waiting lists may be in place for certain age groups, due to the high demand for care. Consider this and see more options for family services on the Human Resources site.
Medical, Dental, and Vision Low Premium Group Insurance Costs
Employees pay 5% of the monthly healthcare premiums for themselves and eligible dependents, while UO pays 95%. Eligible dependents include a spouse, domestic partner (same and opposite sex), and dependent children. By comparison at our peer AAU public universities, employees pay an average of 18.9% to 24.9% of their monthly healthcare premiums (depending on their family status.
Retirement Plan Programs
As is common at many of our peers, university faculty have a choice between two retirement plan options:
PERS: an option that includes a defined benefit pension as well as a defined contribution investment fund
ORP: a defined contribution investment fund.
It is difficult to compare PERS to typical plans at peers because of the complexities of defined benefit plans and because of the combination between defined benefit and the defined contribution investment fund. Another way to say this is: To see an amount equal 16% go into a retirement plan will cost 4% withheld from pay, compared to 7.5% among AAU public peers.
Faculty and Staff Tuition Benefits
University employees and their family are encouraged to continue their education. UO offers a 70% discount on tuition for faculty and their eligible family members. This benefit can be used at all Oregon public universities.
Employees who are employed for half-time or more on the first day of classes can register for a maximum of 12 credit hours per term at a reduced rate of 30% of resident undergraduate tuition.
