Teaching News

Dear Colleagues,

We invite you to learn all about the Williams Fund Instructional Proposal process—and be inspired by grantees Computer and Information Sciences' Kathleen Freeman and SOJC’s Ed Madison at the Williams Showcase event next Friday, Feb 25, 1-2pm. Hosted on Zoom. Register here

Also, the Winter 2022 deadline for students to change the grading option in grade-optional courses has been extended by the Academic Council to provide some flexibility for students during this challenging term. The details can be found on the Registrar’s website. Students have until this Sunday, Feb. 20, to drop courses via DuckWeb.

Student-facing Wellbeing Resources in Canvas Commons

We know members of the UO community are facing ongoing stressors that, for students, can impact learning. Taking opportunities to identify and reflect on our experiences and resources, while not a panacea, can help boost student self-efficacy and decrease negative impacts on mental health.

TEP, UO Online, Counseling Services, Duck Nest and PE & Rec have collaborated on a suite of practices that instructors can import into their Canvas site to support increased self-efficacy and wellbeing. Additional practices will be added in the coming weeks.

Instructors can explore these resources and ways they can consider using them by first signing into Canvas and then clicking on this link for Student Wellbeing Practices and Resources or by clicking on Canvas Commons and searching for “student wellbeing.”

Instructor Technology Resources: Hardware, In-Class Support, Studio Time

Hardware to Improve Classroom Streaming: For instructors who want to stream their class session for absent students, but who aren’t teaching in a HyFlex classroom, the Tech Desk (now located in the EMU near the Craft Center) has all-in-one Logitech Meetup conference units available for checkout.

The Meetups include a wide-angle lens and a wide-area microphone designed to pick up sounds from across a room—enabling remote students to better participate in classroom discussions. Very large rooms will still present a sound problem, even with a Meetup. Reserve a Logitech Meetup in advance.

In-Class Support: For large-class instructors, did you know you can apply for an undergraduate student to be assigned to your course to offer regular technological support during class? Sign up here »

And all faculty and GE instructors who have questions or need classroom technology training in advance of your teaching, please create a ticket at Classroom Technology Support.

Ed Tech Studio: Would you like to record higher quality instructional content than you can achieve with your laptop in your office? The Ed Tech Suite offers superior audio, video and lighting equipment for faculty wanting next level production capabilities. The acoustics are particularly suited for podcasts and other productions requiring the highest quality audio. The space can be used independently or with a full array of technical support.

Use this link to reserve a time in the suite. See a description of the Ed Tech Suite and other media options on the Media Support webpage.
