A Message to Prospective UO Faculty

Welcome to the University of Oregon, where the deep commitment of our academic community to the transformative power of higher education is animated and amplified by the beauty of our natural surroundings.

One of the most compelling aspects of the University of Oregon is our long history of research and education rooted in the liberal arts mission to empower free citizens to contribute well and thoughtfully to a free society. This offers us an opportunity to meaningfully integrate the full range of human knowing—from arts, design, and the humanities, to the professions, the social sciences, and the pure and applied sciences—into our efforts to enrich society and create a more just and beautiful world.

To do this well requires establishing and nurturing a culture of trust in which each member of the faculty is supported in doing their best, most meaningful work. The Provost's Office and our Deans have committed to putting the academic mission at the heart of the university through values—enacted, authentic, coordinated leadership. We believe that this commitment, when practiced intentionally and over time, will enable us to actualize the full potential of the wonderful people who make the University of Oregon the very special place it is.

As you explore the life of the University and the opportunity to join our vibrant community , I invite you to walk along the Willamette River, enjoy the majestic beauty of the Pacific Northwest, and spend some time in meaningful dialogue with our students, staff, and faculty. As you do, I hope you will experience, as I have, the rich texture of connection that gives the work we do here depth and meaning and purpose.

Sincerely,
Chris Long
Provost and Senior Vice President
