Habib Iddrisu
2020 | HERMAN AWARD FOR SPECIALIZED PEDAGOGY
“Teaching from your heart brings genuine joy to all involved. I have long held the conviction that sharing of knowledge and culture is incredibly valuable, and this award provides the opportunity to reinforce the value of this vital work.”
Iddrisu is a traditionally trained dancer, musician, and historian from Northern Ghana, born into the Bizing family of court historians and musicians of the Dagbamba/Dagomba people.
“I have a unique interdisciplinary appointment shared between dance and musicology/ethnomusicology through the School of Music and Dance,” Iddrisu says. “In this role, I critically engage in both of these fields as an artist, scholar and teacher. My research explores the transformation of a variety of African performance pieces as they move from village to village, from rural to urban settings, from ritual to stage show within a global context.”
“This is an extraordinary time to be a teacher, and adjustment and adaptation can never be overemphasized. Connecting remotely with students this term has been smooth and rewarding as I continue to reach out to them even more than usual to let them know that I am available to help them transition into this new norm.”
