Military and Federal Agency Deployment Accommodation Rights (Policy)

  1. A student at the University of Oregon who is a member of the military, a member of the commissioned corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration or a member of the Public Health Service of the United States Department of Health and Human Services detailed by proper authority for duty with the Army or Navy and who is ordered to federal or state active duty, or called to unit training, assembly or annual training, regardless of the length of duty or training, and who presents verification of active duty/reserve component training, has the following rights:
    • The student may drop or withdraw from courses, with refund, even after published deadlines; or
    • Receive a grade of incomplete and, upon release from active duty/reservist training, complete the course in accordance with the University of Oregon’s practice for completion of incomplete courses; or
    • Continue and complete the course for credit subject to the conditions in section 4 of this policy.
  2. If the student elects to withdraw from UO, they have a right to be readmitted and reenrolled at the University within one year after release from active duty/reservist training without paying a readmission fee.
  3. The student also has the right to continuation of scholarships and grants awarded to the student that were funded by UO before the student was ordered to active duty/reservist training.
  4. A student who elects to continue and complete a course for credit is subject to the following conditions:
    • Course sessions the student misses due to active duty/reservist deployment and training shall not adversely impact the student’s grade for the course.
    • The student may not be automatically excused from completing course assignments due during the period the student serves on active duty/reservist training.
    • The student may, when pedagogically appropriate, complete any missed course assignment, examination or other course work after the student has returned from active duty/reservist training or medical treatment related to military service and has been provided a reasonable amount of time to complete the assignment or other course work or prepare for and take the examination; or
    • The instructor may award a letter grade, or grade of pass, if the CRN is built with a P/N requirement, without requiring the student to complete the missed assignment, examination, or other course work only if the instructor determines that the student has completed sufficient work and demonstrated sufficient progress toward meeting course requirements to justify the student’s grade without completion of the missed assignment, examination or other course work.
  5. The student must submit military orders to the Office of the Registrar. Documentation will be maintained in the student’s record (per UO Record Retention Schedule).
  6. Students who are called to unit training, assembly or annual training are required to inform their instructors of record of their training schedule that will require them to miss courses as early in a term that is practicable.
