A Message From Provost Christopher P. Long

Welcome to the University of Oregon, where the deep commitment of our academic community to the transformative power of higher education is animated and amplified by the beauty of our natural surroundings.

One of the most compelling aspects of the University of Oregon is our long history of research and education rooted in the liberal arts mission to empower free citizens to contribute well and thoughtfully to a free society. This offers us an opportunity to meaningfully integrate the full range of human knowing—from arts, design, and the humanities to the professions, the social sciences, and the pure and applied sciences—into our efforts to enrich society and create a more just and beautiful world.

What I've appreciated most about UO are my interactions with faculty at my school and the university more broadly. Everyone I've encountered in my five-years here has been welcoming, supportive, and eager to share my insights.

Honoring Native Peoples and Lands

The University of Oregon is located on Kalapuya Ilihi, the traditional indigenous homeland of the Kalapuya people. Following treaties between 1851 and 1855, Kalapuya people were dispossessed of their indigenous homeland by the United States government and forcibly removed to the Coast Reservation in Western Oregon. Today, descendants are citizens of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon and the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians of Oregon and continue to make important contributions to their communities, at UO, and across the land we now refer to as Oregon.
