New Student Survey Results
Almost 4,000 UO undergraduates shared obstacles to their remote learning in the June Student Experience in the Research University survey. Motivation, lack of interaction with their peers, and a perceived inability to learn online were most frequently cited. Learn more about these revealing survey results and what teaching practices might support students over these hurdles.
Remote vs. Web?
Advisers are fielding many questions from students about the difference between REMOTE and WEB classes. Thank you for your care and patience when students raise questions with you: they’re being encouraged to talk with their instructors to clarify expectations. This term the Journal Club explores active learning strategies and discusses how to apply them to remote and online courses. We will concentrate for several weeks on assessment, as developing fair, probing assessments that maintain academic integrity continues to be a sticking point for many faculty. The Science Teaching Journal Club provides a friendly, collegial gathering place for participants from all ranks and disciplines. We invite you to join us at our weekly meetings, which feature lively, structured discussions of the readings. Feel free to participate in the whole series or just drop in for a specific conversation.

UO’s Lab Lit Book Club is modeled after a monthly science book club at the Royal Institution in London. This term, we’ll discuss Real Life by Brandon Taylor. Real Life is the story of Wallace, a graduate student in a nematode lab, who is working towards a Ph.D. in biochemistry. This critically acclaimed novel is also about racism, homophobia, and underrepresented groups in STEM.
Graduate Teaching Initiative
TEP’s Graduate Teaching Initiative offers structured and rigorous pathways for UO graduate students to develop as instructors. Graduate students participate in individual and small-group teaching consultations, draft a teaching portfolio, observe classes taught by faculty members and peers, and attend various workshops and conversations on teaching. Graduate students who complete the series of core requirements earn a certificate of completion from the initiative and have the opportunity to develop a special project to earn an advanced certificate of completion.
