COVID Containment Plan for Classes

The UO Corona Corps team has developed a communication toolkit for instructional faculty to provide students in their classes with approved information about how the University of Oregon is working to contain COVID on campus and in classrooms (resources at bottom of page). The toolkit information is organized into the following 3 primary content domains, which represents the UO’s approach to classroom containment of COVID-19:

Prevention: To prevent or reduce the spread of COVID-19 in classrooms and on campus, all students and employees must:

Containment: If a student in class tests positive for COVID-19, everyone should :

  • Expect and follow guidance in classroom notification
  • Answer the call if contact by the Corona Corps (541-356-2292)
  • Isolate if you test positive or are symptomatic
  • Quarantine if you are an unvaccinated close contact or a vaccinated close contact with symptoms
  • Test weekly if you are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated
  • Stay home if symptomatic and complete the Complete the UO COVID-19 case and contact reporting form

Support: The following resources are available to students.

We strongly encourage instructors to use assigned seating or seating charts where possible. This will assist with contact tracing and identifying those students who need to quarantine. For larger classes, instructors might consider creating seating zones that students could commit to sitting in for the term. If these zones are separated by a row or an aisle, and students know what zone they are in (by a letter or number), it will help the contact tracing team zero in on which students to contact.

Barring this, it will be important for students to know the names of those seated in close proximity to them, in the event they become positive for COVID. Please consider setting aside a few minutes each day, before beginning instruction, explicitly for students to “get to know their neighbors.”

Good Classroom Citizenship

Instructors can also help with classroom containment by reinforcing “Good Classroom Citizenship” with their classes:

  • Wear your mask and make sure it fits you well
  • Stay home if you’re sick
  • Get to know your neighbors in class, and let them know if you test positive
  • Get tested regularly
  • Watch for signs and symptoms with the daily symptom self-check
  • Wash your hands frequently or use hand sanitizer
  • Complete the UO COVID-19 case and contact reporting form if you test positive or are a close contact of someone who tests positive.

Instructors can download two slides that can be shown at the beginning of class to stress the containment plan and their role. We strongly encourage faculty to share this information in each of their classes during the first week or so.

Instructors can also download this Instructor’s Guide for Classroom Containment that details what they should do in the case of a positive case in one of their classes.

Jeffrey Measelle, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology has been added to the Corona Corps team in the role of faculty liaison to answer faculty questions and/or to work directly with faculty round COVID-19 containment in their classroom. Please feel free to reach out to Jeff if you have questions or concerns. He can be reached at
