The Clusters of Excellence program was developed by Provost Scott Coltrane in 2015, with the intent to expand the proportion of UO faculty who are engaged in cutting edge research and creative endeavors. Proposals were submitted at the college-level by small groups of faculty, organized research or curricular programs, departments, schools and colleges, or cross-college collaborations. Applications were evaluated by standing advisory committees, including the Research Advisory Board, Academic Leadership Team, and Faculty Advisory Committee. Committee recommendations were presented to the provost, who consulted with the vice president for research and innovation and the president before selecting cluster areas. The top cluster proposals were announced by the provost on June 18, 2014.
